Swimming and diving sees good results against Union and St. Catherine

BARBOURVILLE, Ky.—The Transylvania University swimming and diving teams turned in several strong performances on Saturday, picking up eight wins in a meet against St. Catherine College and Union College.

Edward Freeman turned in one of the best races of the day for the Pioneers in the 50-yard freestyle. Freeman's time of 22.65 was good enough for first place in the event and now stands as the third fastest time in the Stivers Rec Center at Union. Freeman was followed closely by Cameron Brewer, who took second place in the 50 free with a time of 23.26.

Freeman joined teammates Taylor Petersen, Ty Alderman and Ian Wathen as part of a 400-yard freestyle relay team that took first place, narrowly edging out the second place team by just over a second.

Alderman gave the Pioneers a boost individually as well, knocking more than a second off his seed time in the 100-yard butterfly and swimming a 56.16 to grab another win for Transy. Alderman's win came in a tightly contested heat, as he finished just 0.17 seconds ahead of the second place finisher and 0.18 before Freeman, who took third place in the event.

The Pioneers continued their dominance in the relay events from earlier this season as they nabbed an event win in the women's 200-yard medley relay by nearly three seconds. The team of Julia Johnson, Morgan Cyrus, Elizabeth Davis and Kiali Jelinek swam a time of 1:56.53 to take the win home.

Johnson snagged another win for Transylvania in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:17.39, almost 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Union. Also pulling in wins for Transy was Hannah Jelinek, who posted scores of 201.98 and 171.38 in the one-meter and three-meter diving events respectively. Both of those scores were good enough for first place. The last win of the day for the Pioneers came in the 200-yard breaststroke on the shoulders of Cyrus, who notched a time of 2:32.91 for the victory.

The Pioneers will return to action on Dec. 5 and 6 as they host the Transylvania University Invitational at the University of Kentucky. More information about the invite can be found here.
