Pioneers swimming and diving team commence 2016-17 campaign at Centre

Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania swimming and diving team opened up its 2016-17 season schedule with a dual meet competition against the Centre College Colonels on Friday evening.

The Pioneers' evening was highlighted by a pair of wins by senior women's swimmer Morgan Cyrus, who took first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley, and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Cyrus touched the wall in the 200 IM in 2:21.49 to set the tone for her final season of collegiate swimming. Cyrus, who holds the Transylvania school record in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, maintained her status as the swimmer to beat in Central Kentucky in those respective events, as the senior took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.90. The finish was more than two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

The 100 breaststroke race served as one of the most successful team race of the day for the Pioneers; finishing third in that race was freshman Sarah Haerle, who achieved a top-three finish in the race in her collegiate debut. Senior Julia Johnson finished fourth in the race to help the Pioneers coat the top-four of the 100 breaststroke.

Haerle also enjoyed a solid performance in the 200 IM, finishing second to record a 1-2 finish with Cyrus in that final.

Other high marks on the women's side included freshman Kelsey Stevens, who issued a strong collegiate debut with a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.60. Junior Kiali Jelinek took third in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 1:05.49.

The Transylvania men's swim contingent made waves on opening night; senior Fernando Zarate took third in the 500-yard freestyle, completing the marathon effort in 5:27.96.

Freshman Colton Kinzer made a solid debut for the Transylvania men's swimming team, finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.27 to complete a scintillating sprint.

Centre got the upper hand as the night came to a close, as the Centre women's team outscored Transy, 147 to 71, while the men's team took a 152-32 victory to complete the dual sweep.

The Pioneers now return to Lexington for a quick turnaround as they prepare to host their home opener on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Transylvania will host Asbury University in a dual meet at the William T. Young Campus Center Swimming Pool.
