Franklin, Ind. – A marathon performance from freshman Mattie Fogle highlighted the evening for the Transylvania swimming and diving team as they took to the road for a Friday night meet against the Franklin College Grizzlies.
Franklin took the overall meet against Transylvania, winning 355-67 as the Grizzlies held serve in Friday's races.
Early in the Friday meet, it was the freshman Fogle who stepped up in the women's 1650 yard freestyle race to capture a decisive win against her two other foes who both hailed from Franklin. Plowing through the water over the span of 33 laps, Fogle outpaced Franklin's Taylor Tichenor and Mary Jeffries to touch the wall in 20:09.02, more than 25 seconds ahead of the next closest finisher in Tichenor.
Junior Zachary Griffis had a competitive showing in the men's 50 yard freestyle as he took second in 23:87. His counterpart freshman Colton Kinzer finished tightly behind in fourth in the race with a time of 24.24.
In other notable women's action, senior Morgan Cyrus came in second in the women's 100 breaststroke, hitting the finish line in 1:11.08. Cyrus also anchored a 200 yard medley relay team that came in second; along with freshman Kelsey Stevens, freshman Sarah Haerle, and junior Kiali Jelinek, the Pioneers completed the race in 1:58.43 for the finish.
Stevens picked up a second-place finish in the women's 100 backstroke, completing her race in 1:07.95.
The Pioneers next return to action on Saturday, November 19 when they host Union College in a dual meet on the campus of Transylvania. The home meet at the William T. Young Campus Center pool is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
