Lexington, Ky. – Behind pivotal late performances from Pioneers women's swimmers, the Transylvania swimming and diving team split its dual meet against the Union College (Ky.) Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at the William T. Young Center.
The Pioneers women's swimming and diving contingent claimed a 131-122 victory against the visiting Bulldogs, while Union won the men's matchup 136-73 in the second home meet of the 2016-17 season for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers women's team put its foot on the pedal in the 25th event of the afternoon in the 100 yard butterfly; senior Julia Johnson captured victory in the race in 1:04.77 seconds, and was followed by teammates junior Kiali Jelinek and senior Elizabeth Davis to capture 16 points in the event. The 1-2-3 finish by Transylvania put the Pioneers firmly in control of the meet.
Transylvania further cemented its way to victory with a 2-3-4th place finish in the women's 200 individual medley; freshman Sarah Haerle took second in the event with a 2:22.03 second finish, and was followed by senior Morgan Cyrus and junior Elizabeth Lewis to put the Pios into position for the victory.
The Transylvania men's team fielded wins by freshman Colton Kinzer in the men's 200 freestyle as he touched the wall in 1:56.20 seconds. Senior Fernando Zarate picked up wins in the men's 100 backstroke (58.59 seconds), and the men's 200 backstroke (2:04.32 seconds). Freshman Kellen Casey took the win in the men's 200 breaststroke to cap off a string of individual wins for the Transylvania men.
The Pioneers also came up big on the women's side thanks to Cyrus, who was victorious in the women's 200 breaststroke and the 100 breaststroke. The 200 breaststroke was a game-changer as well for the Pioneers, who recorded a 1-2-3 finish in that race, with Haerle and Johnson finishing on the heels of Cyrus.
The Pioneers will break for the Thanksgiving holiday before resuming their season in two weekends as they host the gargantuan two-day Transy Invitational at the University of Kentucky. Saturday preliminaries are slated to begin at approximately 11:30 a.m.
