Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – The Transylvania swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2017 portion of their schedule with a tri-meet on Wednesday evening versus both the Wittenberg University Tigers and the Allegheny College Gators at Miami Country Day School.
The meet was part of Transylvania's 2016-17 season training trip, an excursion the Pioneers typically embark upon during their winter break. This year's edition saw the Pioneers pause from a productive and revitalizing collection of sessions to test their mettle against Allegheny and Wittenberg.
Notable finishes for the Pioneers on the men's side included a third-place finish in the men's 200 medley, as the foursome of Fernando Zarate, Kellen Casey, Zachary Griffis, and Edward Freeman completed the race in 1:45.90 seconds. Zarate also posted a second-place finish in the men's 50 backstroke, touching the wall in 27.18 seconds.
Senior Morgan Cyrus took second place in the women's 50 breaststroke in a meet that emphasized sprint races. Cyrus finshed in 34.11 seconds.
The Pioneers utilized the event as a way to culminate a growth-intensive week of training as they gear up for the stretch run of Ohio Athletic Conference competition that tops off in late February.
"This was a great opportunity for all three teams to get up and race after a hard week of training," said Transylvania head coach Keaton Koukis. "We joined the annual tradition of doing a fun relay involving all the seniors from each team versus the freshman from each team, and the seniors took the win - overall it was a great chance for us to bond with some other teams, as well as our own and create some great memories along the way."
The Pioneers next return to action on Saturday, January 14 as they host Lindsey Wilson College in their senior day meet at the William T. Young Center on the campus of Transylvania.
