Franklin, Ind. - The women's contingent of the Transylvania swimming and diving team led the proceedings at the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference invitational event on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Franklin College.
Transylvania, which competes in the Ohio Athletic Conference for swimming and diving, joined with the four other schools from the HCAC which participate in swimming and diving. The Transylvania women's swim and dive team finished third out of five teams, while the men's team finished in a fourth-place tie.
The Pioneers women's team dazzled in the women's 200 yard individual medley; junior Kiali Jelinek picked up the win in the event while freshman Sarah Haerle and senior Morgan Cyrus finished second and third, respectively to sweep the event.
There was more excellence from Cyrus, who took first place in both the women's 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Cyrus won the 200 breaststroke event in 2:33.49 seconds, and the 100 breaststroke race in 1:09.96 seconds. Haerle also finished third in the 100 breaststroke race.
Cyrus teamed up with Jelinek, Haerle, and senior Julia Johnson to take second in the women's 200 medley relay, finishing just behind Franklin in the race.
Johnson also made her mark on the afternoon, taking first place in the women's 200 yard butterfly. Johnson touched the wall in 2:22.40 seconds to complete a win-packed day for the Pioneers squad.
The Pioneers are next in action on Friday, January 27 as they visit Sewanee: University of the South. That meet is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. eastern time start.
