Indianapolis, IN – The Transylvania men's tennis team won the opener of their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament run over Manchester on Friday, sweeping all five contests before the match ended early.
Taking to the courts of the West Indy Racquet Club as the No. 3 seed team, the Pioneers made quick work of the Manchester Spartans, the No. 6 seed.
The first round match commenced with doubles action across three courts, and on all three the Pioneers wasted little time. Seniors Robert Albrecht and Dylan Conner teamed up for a one-sided victory over Stratton Smith and Spencer Thomas as the Pioneer duo cruised to an 8-1 win in #1 doubles.
Zachary Meikle and Luke Groene also took aim at perfection on Friday as they defeated Connor Eichenauer and Isaac Collis 8 to 2 in their #2 doubles matchup. Joshua Buckman and Sam Hodgson helped their other doubles teams take care of business over Kyler Love and Garrett Bear with the 8-3 pro-set victory.
The Pioneers headed into singles play needing just two victories to clinch the necessary five points to move on to the next round. In #2 singles, Meikle took care of Thomas 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the fourth point. Conner in #3 singles action finished Collis to secure the first-round win for Transylvania.
With the five points in hand, Transylvania concluded the match against Manchester and retreated back to their lodging base for the day with a quick turnaround in store against No. 2 seed Earlham. The Pioneers will try to upend the Quakers beginning at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow back at the West Indy Racquet Club. If the Pioneers achieve victory on Saturday, they would earn the chance to play for the HCAC championship on Sunday.
