Georgetown, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team waged a series of hard-fought battles against the Franklin College Grizzlies Saturday morning at Spindletop Hall, but the Grizzlies emerged with an 8-1 match victory.
It was the first match of the year contested by the Pioneers at Spindletop Hall in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match versus the Grizzlies. While the Grizzlies took two of three doubles matches from Transylvania, the Pioneers headed into singles competition with high hopes and some momentum from the No. 3 doubles win by juniors Esteban Favetto and J.T. Henderson with a 9-8 final.
Junior Luke Groene competed in arguably the most riveting contest of the day against Alex Hammer, but eventually fell 10-2 in the tiebreaking third set.
There was another classic match in the No. 4 singles matchup between senior Hussain Siddiqui and Dean Elrod; after dropping a first set loss 6-2, Siddiqi battled back in the second set for a 7-5 win. Elrod eventually fended off Siddiqui with a 6-2 win in the third set.
The Pioneers are back on the grind Wednesday, April 12 when they host the Earlham College Quakers. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start.
