Transylvania men's tennis falls to Centre at home in tight match

Men's Tennis final

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss at the hands of the Centre College Colonels at Top Seed Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon.

Transylvania took an early 2-1 lead in the match thanks to a thrilling 9-8 victory in No. 1 doubles action from Hugo Kouhkna and Nick McNamee, followed by an 8-5 win by Noah McNamee and Arjun Gupta in the No. 2 doubles match.

In singles play the Transylvania duo of Kouhkna and Nick McNamee earned the Pioneers a pair of wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches respectively.

With the match score even at 4-4, the match came down to a battle at No. 1 singles that Gupta eventually dropped by the final score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-7 (5-10).

Despite the loss, head coach Kevin Calhoun was encouraged by his team's performance on Sunday. "Credit first goes to Centre," said Calhoun. "They absorbed everything we threw at them, and that was everything we had. I'm so proud of my team. They played with their hearts and fought together. The match came down to execution and we missed a ball here and there. There are many great moments coming for this team."

The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday, March 1 as they host the Wittenberg University Tigers. The match is set for a 3:00 p.m. start at the Top Seed Tennis Club's outdoor courts.
