Hanover, Ind. –The Transylvania men's tennis team pushed the Hanover College Panthers to the brink before being edged out by the final score of 5-4 at the Zeddies Tennis Center on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-1 lead over the Panthers after doubles play thanks to an 8-4 victory by the team of Arjun Gupta and Hugo Kouhkna at No. 1 doubles and a thrilling 8-7 win by the team of Nick and Noah McNamee in the No. 2 doubles match.
Gupta picked up his second victory of the day via a 6-0, 6-4 win at No.1 doubles to keep the winning effort alive while Noah McNamee also prevailed for the second time on Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.
However, the Panthers picked up victories at No. 2, No. 3, No.5, and No. 6 singles to clinch the 5-4 dual match victory.
With the loss, Transylvania's record falls to 6-10 on the season and 2-2 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, while Hanover improves to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Sunday, April 21 as they host the Franklin College Grizzlies. The match between the Grizzlies and the Pioneers is set for a noon start at the Top Seed Tennis Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
