Nicholasville, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team fought past the Franklin College Grizzlies with a 6-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Top Seed Tennis Club in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
The Pioneers grabbed two of three doubles matches to launch towards a successful singles outing in which the home team secured four of six singles wins.
Transylvania improved to 3-2 in HCAC play and 7-10 overall on the 2018-19 campaign while Franklin fell to 4-2 in conference play.
Saturday's victory for the Pioneers marked the first win over the Grizzlies in three years while the result stood in sharp contrast to Franklin's 9-0 win over the Pioneers last season.
On Saturday, the new blood of Arjun Gupta and Hugo Kouhkna pumped out an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles play to set the tone for Saturday while Nick and Noah McNamee added to the tune of the afternoon with a resounding 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles. Hunter Gregg and Daniel Cooper were outdueled, 8-3 in No. 3 doubles but the Pioneers took plenty of momentum into their Saturday singles matches with two wins in hand.
Kouhkna reprised his morning dominance with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 2 singles over Jacob Zachary while Gupta improved as his afternoon went along with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Blake Amonett in No. 1 singles.
Transylvania earned everything else it needed in No. 3 and No. 4 singles as Nick McNamee won over Ty McCory 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot; Noah McNamee won convincingly against Dean Elrod, 6-1, 6-1 in No. 4 singles to give the Pioneers a 1-0 start in their regular season-ending four-match homestand.
The Pioneers will continue their home schedule on Monday, April 22 as they host the Mount St. Joseph University Lions on the Transylvania campus at the Transylvania Tennis Courts. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
