Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania track and field team will open up its 2019 outdoor season with the Transylvania Invitational at Pat Deacon Stadium on the campus of Transylvania University this weekend.
The 2019 edition of Transylvania's home event will kick off on Friday, March 22 at 5:00 p.m. and continue on Saturday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m. with a full range of events.
This year's Transylvania Invitational is projected to welcome over 500 student-athletes from 18 institutions around the Bluegrass region including three teams from the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
As the outdoor portion of the 2019 spring season gets underway, the Pioneers will look to harness the momentum and success from their indoor season into the outdoor circuit. The Pioneers boast two HCAC champions from the indoor season in freshman Taylor Allen, the conference champion in the women's 400 meters and Jordan Upton, the HCAC champion in the men's triple jump. Junior Rian Boelter also leads the Pioneers this weekend at home after earning USTFCCCA All-Region honors following the 2019 indoor season.
Transylvania's second-year track and field head coach Taylor Throckmorton forecasts a season-opener that serves to be both useful for his program and a special event for the other 17 teams in attendance. "We are excited to be hosting one of the premier track and field events in the state of Kentucky for this outdoor season," stated Throckmorton. "Much of the best competition in our region is coming and we're excited to see how we stack up as we begin our outdoor season. In both the men's and women's javelin, Graham Smith and Rian Boelter are seeded first and we are eager to see how those two athletes will perform."
Admission for Saturday's meet is $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens ages 65 and over, $4 for students ages 5-17, and free for children ages 4 and under. Faculty, staff, and students with an official Transylvania Crimson Card ID are also admitted for free.
Friday's events get underway at 5:00 p.m. with select field events and the 10K race. Saturday's event will begin with select field events at 8:30 a.m. and begin in earnest with all track and field events at 10:00 a.m.
Saturday's events will be streamed live on the Transy Sports Network beginning at 10:00 a.m.
