NCAA TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Transylvania softball opens up 2019 NCAA Regionals vs. Piedmont on Friday in Georgia

NCAA Tournament

Demorest, Ga. – The Transylvania softball team will commence its 2019 NCAA Tournament run on the campus of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia, on Friday, May 10 in the Demorest regional.

The Pioneers (28-11) will take on the host Piedmont College Lions (29-10) in Demorest after extenuating circumstances forced the Regional to be moved from Emory University in Atlanta. Transylvania returns to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in program history.

After finishing the regular season as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference runner-up by half a game, Transylvania won three straight tournament games to claim the HCAC Tournament Championship with a 4-1 victory over Mount St. Joseph in last Saturday's championship game.

Joining the Pioneers in the Demorest regional are the Emory University Eagles (30-10) and the Emory & Henry College Wasps (26-16) of Emory, Virginia.

Piedmont reached the NCAA Tournament as an at-large bid out of the USA South Conference. This is the seventh trip to the NCAA tournament for the Lions and their first since 2016.

Piedmont and Transylvania's lone meeting was on May 11, 2006, with the Lions taking a 7-2 victory from the Pioneers in the NCAA Regional round.

Emory possesses a record of 30-10 as the Eagles enter the NCAA Tournament after winning the  University Athletic Association championship for the 13th time in program history. The Eagles are making their 16th trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Emory & Henry carries a record of 26-16 into the tournament. The Wasps received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after finishing fourth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament following a 4-1 loss to the No. 1 ranked Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. Emory & Henry and Transylvania were each part of the same NCAA Regional two years ago in Berry, Georgia. The Pioneers defeated Emory & Henry 4-1 on May 12, 2017, to open up the Regional before sweeping Berry in back to back games to win and advance into the Super Regional round for the first time ever.

All games will be played at the Walker Athletic Complex on the campus of Piedmont College. The four-team regional is scheduled to begin with Transylvania's game versus Piedmont on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and run through Sunday, May 12 with the regional championship game and a second game, if necessary. The winner of the regional will advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament, scheduled to begin May 17.

Tickets for each day's session are $10 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and students, and $5 children. Ticket sales will be cash only.

All games will be streamed live via Piedmont's Athletic Department.
