Demorest, Ga. – The Transylvania softball team opened the 2019 NCAA Division III softball tournament with a 3-1 loss to the Piedmont College Lions in game one of the Demorest Regional at Walker Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon.
Picking up the loss in the circle for Transylvania was Kameron Bowling. The sophomore scattered eight hits, struck out four Lions, and did not allow a walk in eight stellar innings of work.
Neither team was able to manufacture a run over the first three innings. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Liter put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 with a solo home run that sailed over the left field wall.
Piedmont responded in the top of the fifth as Haley McCurry doubled to left field, moved over to third on a groundout, and then scored on a fielder's choice.
The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 as the Pioneers and Lions moved to the seventh inning.
With just one out in the bottom of the seventh, Transylvania appeared primed to claim the victory as the Pioneers put two runners on base with singles from Nunn and Janelle Hynes. However, Piedmont's Melissa Eckman responded with two straight strikeouts to end the inning and send the game into extra innings.
With the score even at 1-1, the Lions charged ahead with a two-run double to centerfield in the top of the eighth.
The Pioneers were unable to create any offense in the bottom half of the frame, allowing the Lions to escape with the 3-1 victory.
The Pioneers will next face off with the Emory & Henry University Wasps tomorrow afternoon in an elimination game. First pitch between the Pioneers and the Wasps is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Walker Athletic Complex. The winner of the game will match up against the loser of game three between Emory and Piedmont.
