Rose-Hulman sends back Transylvania WBB in slow-paced affair

Novi Walker Transy 58 Rose Hulman 69

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's basketball team dropped a 58-69 decision to the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers at the Beck Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Transylvania falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

The Pioneers were led in scoring by senior forward Rachel Cox, who added 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the loss. Cox also went 9-for-11 from the free-throw line.

Joining Cox in double figures was freshman guard Zenoviah Walker, who scored a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.

Rose-Hulman made its presence felt right from the start as the Engineers went on 7-1 run to open the game. The Pioneers looked to respond but poor shooting led to a 16-10 Rose-Hulman lead at the end of the quarter.

The Pioneers opened the second quarter with a jumper by Cox and a deep three-pointer by Walker in the first minute that cut the Rose-Hulman lead to 19-15.

However, the Pioneers' shooting woes continued as they posted a dismal shooting mark of 30 percent from the field, allowing the Engineers to extend their lead to 25-18 lead at the half.

In addition to the poor shooting by the Pioneers, Rose-Hulman also won the battle for the boards as the Engineers outrebounded Transylvania 24-9 in the first half.

Transylvania opened the third quarter on a 5-0 run that cut the Rose-Hulman lead to 23-25. Not to be outdone, the Engineers finished the period on an 18-6 run that extended their lead to 43-29 heading into the fourth quarter.

A pull-up three-pointer by Walker cut the Rose-Hulman lead to 45-39, forcing the Engineers to call a timeout just 15 seconds into the fourth quarter.

The Engineers responded with another big run to extend their lead to 49-31, their largest of the game, at the 8:40 mark. The teams traded baskets over the final minutes of the contest before Rose-Hulman eventually claimed the 69-58 victory.

Next up, Transylvania will break for fall semester finals before embarking on a nonconference trip to the Big Apple to face The College of New Jersey Lions in Ewing, New Jersey on Tuesday, December 19. Tipoff between the Lions and the Pioneers is set for 6:00 p.m. at Packer Hall.
