Carmel, Ind. – Transylvania women's basketball senior guard Ashton Woodard has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for women's basketball, the conference announced Monday.
Woodard, a senior from Mount Sterling, Kentucky (Menifee County HS) led the Pioneers in scoring in both of their games last week with the No. 11 Transylvania women's basketball team grabbing a pair of wins to move to 3-0 on the season.
In last Tuesday's 65-57 win at Berea College, Woodard posted a game-high 17 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field with 10 of her 17 coming in the fourth and final quarter to help the Pioneers pull away for good. Woodard's total line consisted of 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block in a game-high 39 minutes.
Woodard followed up her Tuesday performance with a game-high 20 points in Saturday's 59-56 comeback win at Wittenberg University. Woodard led the Pioneers in erasing a 14-point second-half deficit as the Pioneers won by three. Woodard delivered the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left in the game for her latest career clutch moment. The senior finished the game with 20 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
Over the course of the week, Woodard totaled 37 points, 16 rebounds, nine assists, one steal, and one blocks while shooting 45 percent from the floor.
This is the second week in a row leading off the 2019-20 season that a Pioneer women's basketball player has captured Player of the Week honors; Woodard follows in the footsteps of fellow senior Shelby Boyle, who won the award in Week one. This is the first player of the week award of Woodard's career.
The Pioneers return to play on Friday, November 29 against Maryville (Tenn.) College in the first day of action of the Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington. Transylvania tips off against Maryville at 8:00 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center.
