Pioneer women sit in 17th place after first day at Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.—Transylvania University's women's golf team shot a 359 on the opening day of the Jekyll Island Women's Collegiate Invitational, good for 17th place after one round of action.

Senior Tiara Harris shot the low score on the day for the Pioneers, posting a 12-over 84. Harris opened the round strong, finishing the first nine holes at four-over par, including pars on five of the last six holes. Her performance for the day leaves her in a tie for 34th place heading into Saturday's second round action.

Seniors Jerra Kelsey and Alyssa Thompson also provided strong rounds for the Pioneers. Kelsey put up an 88 stroke round for a score of +16, going four-over on the first nine holes before a 12-over back nine dropped her to 63rd overall. Thompson posted a score of +15 with an 87 stroke round, including the only birdie of the day for the Pioneers on the 451 par-5 17th hole. Thompson sits tied for 57th after the first day.

The Pioneers sit 44 strokes behind Rhodes College, who posted a team total of 322. Transylvania begins its second round on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
