Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's golf team produced a second-place showing at its spring season home event, the 2019 Transylvania Spring Invitational on Monday afternoon at the Greenbrier Golf and Country Club.
Warding off a series of blustery elements and finding intermittent patches of gorgeous skies over Sunday and Monday, the Pioneers fought their way to a second-place finish out of six teams with a two-day score of 642. The University of Pikeville finished atop the team leaderboard, finishing six strokes better at 636.
The Pioneers improved upon their Sunday team score of 333 with a 309 on Monday, the best second-round score of any team.
Meredith Moir led the Pioneers' second-round surge on Monday with a one-over-par 73, improving upon her first-round score by seven strokes to finish with a 153. Moir finished in fourth place on the player leaderboard. The senior recorded the second-best Monday score among the 34 golfers.
Moir and Newsome led the field with five birdies each.
Jenna Soderling turned in a Sunday 80 and a Monday 82 to finish with a 162, good for seventh place on the player board and delivered four birdies on the weekend. Trailing closely behind Soderling was her teammate, junior Lexie Lamar, who shot a 78 on Monday to finish with a 163 and check in at eighth place.
Rachel Fine enjoyed a big comeback Monday, improving upon her round-one Sunday score by 12 strokes to turn in a 76, the second-best score among any Pioneer on Tuesday to finish in ninth place with a score of 164.
Rebecca Fine rounded out the Transylvania five with a 181 to take 21st place.
Centre's Bailey Plourde, competing individually, was the medalist with a two-round score of 145.
The Pioneers, having already clinched an automatic berth for their second straight appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championships next month, will next compete on April 20 in Franklin, Indiana at the Franklin Invitational. The two-round event will run Saturday-Sunday at Legends Golf Course.
