Bluffton, Ohio – Lexie Lamar shot a blistering three-over-par 75 in the first round of the HCAC Preview Tournament on Saturday afternoon to catapult the Transylvania women's golf team into first place at the Bluffton Golf Club.
The senior shot a four-under-par on her front nine in Saturday's 18-hole round to finish three strokes ahead of Rose-Hulman's Rachel Zhang, who sits in second place at the halfway point of the two-round tournament.
Grace Chilton shot the best round of her early career as the freshman turned in a nine-over-par 81 to finish in a four-way tie for sixth place after the first round. Joining Chilton in the four-way tie was Rebecca Fine, who matched Chilton's 81.
Rachel Fine finished one stroke off of Chilton and Rebecca Fine to finish the first round in a tie for 10th place after carding an 82. Kelli Harpe rounded out the top five for Transy with a 90 to capture a share of 36th place.
The total team effort saw the Pioneers top the 11-team leaderboard at Bluffton Golf Course with a team score of 319. Transylvania leads second-place Rose-Hulman by two strokes entering Sunday's final round.
Competing at the site of next month's Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the HCAC Preview tournament offers the Pioneers their first glimpse of the championship setting. The Pioneers are the two-time defending champions of the conference tournament and look to defend their title next month.
Transylvania returns to Bluffton Golf Course for the second and final round of play tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
