Defense rules the day as Pioneers and Berry register scoreless draw

Mount Berry, Ga. – The Transylvania women's soccer team battled the Berry College Vikings to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at Bob Pearson Field to complete a weekend trip south with an even result.

Transylvania lifted its record to 2-1-1 after forging the draw with the host of the Berry College Invitational.

Sunday's match offered a chance for redemption towards the Pioneers, who conceded a 1-0 loss the evening before in the first overtime of their match against Covenant. On this afternoon, the Pioneers overcame an offensive impasse to hold Berry in check for a full 110 minutes.

Junior goalie Haley Blackburn put the draw on her record, making 10 saves on the day, the majority of which required a requisite level of anticipation and athleticism.

One of Blackburn's quality saves came in the fourth minute of the second overtime, as she extended to stop a shot from short range along the left side in one of Berry's final attacks on goal.

The first 90 minutes offered opportunities for both sides, but each team's defensive back line turned in class performances.

By the midway point of the first overtime, the match had become a war of attrition as defensive precision became more of a priority, and neither team desired to concede the golden goal.

Both teams emptied their final bursts of energy in the final five minutes of the second overtime as they tried to mount final runs. After the host Vikings failed to convert on a quality chance via a corner kick in the 109th minute, the sun soon set on the match.

The Pioneers now look ahead to their first home contest of the year on Saturday, September 16 when they host John Carroll University at Pat Deacon Stadium. That game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
