Lexington, Ky. – Bargaining for space near the top of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference table, the Transylvania women's soccer team yielded a 1-0 result to the Hanover College Panthers Wednesday night at Pat Deacon Stadium.
Transylvania's defeat dropped the Pioneers to 4-7-2 overall, and 2-2 in conference play. Hanover, who entered the evening tied with the Pioneers in a conference logjam, improved to 3-1 in conference play and 9-3 overall.
An evenly played physical match saw each team make their requisite runs upfield in the early minutes. The Pioneers jawed for possession with Hanover, which was able to escape upfield, but were denied numerous times by Transylvania early.
A match that witnessed a defensive flavor for most of the night saw Hanover break free for one prime opportunity in the 23rd minute. Nursing a free kick from far out along the left side of the pitch, the Panthers served in a lob that was parried away by Transylvania junior goalie Haley Blackburn. Despite the athletic pokeaway, the ball deflected into the box and was recovered by the Panthers, who quickly thrust forward to put the ball in the net for the lone goal of the evening.
Blackburn came up with a match-high eight saves in the game.
Transylvania looks ahead to a Saturday HCAC match at the Manchester University Spartans in North Manchester, Indiana. The opening kick between the Spartans and Pioneers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
