St. Louis, Mo. – The Transylvania women's soccer team claimed its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory on the road versus the Fontbonne University Griffins at Centene Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Abby Baker provided the lone goal of the game to lift the Pioneers to a 1-1 record for the year while the Griffins dropped to 0-2-1.
The Pioneers and Griffins each struggled to create offensive chances during the first half as the two teams combined for just two shot attempts, leading to a scoreless ledger at the break.
The offense impasse continued into the first half hour of the second half, but in the 75th minute, the Pioneers broke through when Cassandra Thomas fed a pass up to Baker, who blasted a shot into the back of the net, giving Transylvania the 1-0 lead.
The Pioneer defense held the Griffins in check over the final 15 minutes of play, allowing Transylvania to escape with the 1-0 win.
Transylvania goalkeeper Morgan Patton collected her first shutout of the season on Saturday as the Pioneer defense held the Griffins' offense in check throughout the night.
The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they visit No. 3 nationally-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears for a matchup with regional implications. First touch between the Bears and the Pioneers is set for 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time at Francis Field.
