Lexington, Ky- The Transylvania women's soccer team scored two goals in the final 17 minutes of regulation to force a 2-2 tie against the Bluffton University Beavers on Saturday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium on the Pioneers' 2019 Senior Day.
The result moves Transylvania's record to 5-8-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play and changes Bluffton's record to 5-10-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the HCAC.
Saturday's action began with a pregame tribute to Brett Edwards and Sloan Cromwell, the two Pioneer women's soccer team members in the Class of 2020. In the ensuing 40 minutes, both teams encountered an offensive deep freeze as each side split possession but couldn't find the elusive finishing opportunities.
It took a late goal in the first half by Bluffton's Julia Gibson to open up the scoring as Bluffton claimed a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.
The Beavers doubled their lead in the 68th minute with a long shot that eluded the grasp of Cromwell in goal as the visitors found themselves 22 minutes away from victory with a 2-0 outlook.
Five minutes later, Transylvania's Cassandra Thomas changed the tenor of the afternoon with a score off an assist from Alli Kling, slicing Bluffton's advantage to 2-1. The goal was Thomas' second score of the season.
With time winding down, the Pioneers found some late-game magic as Thomas fed a perfect pass to Roach, who delivered the equalizer in the 86th minute to level the match at 2-all. The clutch goal was Roach's ninth score of the season and her fifth in conference play.
Roach's dynamite breakthrough forced overtime for Bluffton and Transy, who continued to manifest attacks and opportunities, but ultimately were left in waiting as time ran out.
Cromwell was credited for the draw for Transylvania after finishing the day with six saves.
The Pioneers' next matchup will take place against the Franklin College Grizzlies in Franklin, Indiana. First touch between the Pioneers and Grizzlies is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30th from Faught Stadium.
