DANVILLE, Ky.—The Transylvania University men's and women's swimming and diving teams faced off against in-state Centre College Friday at Boles Natatorium, as the Colonels defeated the Pioneers in both men's and women's competition.
Transylvania took the women's 200 yard medley relay as Julia Johnson, Morgan Cyrus, Kialie Jelinek and Meghan Taylor finished with a time of 1:55.50. Johnson posted a time of 11:42.22 in the women's 1000 yard freestyle, while finishing first in the 100 yard backstroke. Taylor earned first-place points in the women's 50 yard freestyle along with the 100 yard freestyle. Cyrus took the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.28.
In the women's 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Kristen Cornish, Elizabeth Davis, Anna Balassa and Sarah Hernandez posted a time of 1:51.12 earning a second-place finish in the event. Balassa earned the Pioneers points in the 500 yard freestyle with a second-place finish.
On the men's side, the Pioneers were edged by the Colonels in the 200 yard medley relay. Sam Mullen E.J. Quijano, Fernando Zarante and Cameron Brewer finished second in the event earning points for Transylvania.
Taylor Peterson finished with a time of 11:08.03 taking second place in the lengthy 1000 yard freestyle, while Fernando Zarate and Preston Dillard racked up more points for Transylvania in the 200 yard freestyle.
In the 100 close, competitive yard freestyle, Transylvania's Edward Freeman finished second behind Centre's Nicholas Rauh by a mere five-hundredths of a second. The Pioneers took three of the five point positions in the 500 yard freestyle, as Zarate, Peterson and Ian Wathen all scored for Transylvania.
Quijano closed the gap on Centre's Spencer Vetter in the 100 yard breaststroke, but Vetter edge Quijano for the first place finish.
The Pioneers host Wittenberg and Wilmington Saturday at 1 p.m.
