Pioneers edge Wilmington in dual meet

LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their season Saturday earning a combined team win over Wilmington College in a dual meet at the William T. Young Campus Center. 

The women's team edged Wilmington 161-97 helping the Pioneers to a 268-247 combined team win. Wittenberg, however, took the combined team with a score of 358.

The 400 yard medley relay team of Julia Johnson, Morgan Cyrus, Kiali Jelinek and Meghan Taylor picked up an early second place finish with a time of 4:19.02 to set the pace for a competitive meet. The women's team earned first place in seven different events.

Taylor finished with a time of 1:01.72 in the 100 yard backstroke giving the Pioneers first place points, along with first place finishes both the 50 and 100 yard freestyles. Cyrus recorded first place finishes in the 200 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard individual medley along with a second place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke. Jelinek posted a third place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke helping Transylvania extend its lead over Wilmington.

Johnson later edged the competition for a first place finish in the 200 yard fly and the 200 yard backstroke with times of 2:14.74 and 2:16.40, respectively. Grace Kobitter and Callie Anderson showed solid dives taking second and third place for the Pioneers in the one meter dive.

In men's competition, Sam Mullen, EJ Quijano, Fernando Zarate and Edward Freeman finished with a time of 3:47.39 in the 400 yard medley relay earning a second place finish.

Quijano picked up a first place finish in the 200 yard individual medley and second place finishes in the 200 yard breaststroke and the 100 yard breaststroke. Blake Taylor rounded out the top three in the 200 yard individual medley with a third place finish.

Mullen posted times of 58.16 and 2:09.35 in the 100 yard and 200 yard backstroke earning third place in both events. Zarate added a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle, along with a third place finish in the 500 yard freestyle. The 400 yard free relay team of Preston Dillard, Taylor Schooler, Sam Mullen and Cameron Brewer added valuable third place points with a time of 3:31.34.

Transylvania returns to the water Saturday, Nov. 15 as they travel to Franklin College.
