Franklin tops Pioneers despite five first-place finishes

FRANKLIN, Ind.—The Pioneers picked up five first-place finishes, but Franklin College topped the Transylvania University men's and women's swimming and diving teams in a dual meet Saturday.

In the first event of the meet, the 200-yard medley relay team of Meghan Taylor, Morgan Cyrus, Julia Johnson and Kiali Jelinek earned a second place finish with a time of 1:56.26. Meanwhile, the men's team of Taylor Schooler, Edward Freeman, Ty Alderman and Preston Dillard posted a time of 1:49.42 as Franklin narrowly defeated the Pioneers in both men's and women's event.

Taylor posted a first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with an impressive time of 25:39, while finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle. Johnson added two first place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke, along with a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Cyrus posted a time of 1:11.78 earning third place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Senior E.J. Quijano finished first in both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:03.12 and 2:19.53, respectively. Sam Mullen, Fernando Zarate, Cameron Brewer and Quijano finished with a time of 1:33.77 in the 200-yard freestyle for a second place finish. Mullen bested the field with a 57.11 mark in the 100-yard butterfly, along with second place finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke.

The Pioneers host Union College and Lindenwood-Belleville in a tri-meet Saturday. Saturday's meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
