Pioneers tally 10 first-place finishes at HCAC Invitational

FRANKLIN, Ind.—The Transylvania University men's and women's swimming and diving teams tallied 10 first-place finishes to take third-place at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Invitational Saturday at Franklin College.

The women's 200-yard medley team of Julia Johnson, Morgan Cyrus, Elizabeth Davis and Meghan Taylor got the Pioneers off to a hot start, as they have all season. The team raced to a time of 1:54.81 to take first-place in the first event of the day.

Anna Balass added points for Transylvania with a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 19:22.12.Taylor took first-place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.48, while Cyrus also finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke. Johnson and Davis nabbed first and third-place finishes in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:14.89 and 2:29.63, respectively.

The Pioneers proved to not be satisfied, as six more first-place finishes would be posted. Taylor took first in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyles and Kiali Jelinek took third in the 100-yard freestyle.

Johnson posted her third first-place finish of the day winning the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:15.95, before also taking first in the 200-yard individual medley. As she did in the 100-yard event, Cyrus also finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.83. Cyrus also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley behind teammate Johnson.

Balassa added a solid second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and Jelinek posted a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

Callie Anderson received fourth place in the 1 meter dive and also finished second in the women's three meter dive.

In men's competition, the 200-yard medley relay team of E.J. QuijanoSam MullenEdward Freeman and Fernando Zarante posted a time of 1:41.35 to take third-place in the event.

Quijano dominated the 100 and 200-yard breaststrokes with a first-place and a third-place finish.

Transylvania hosts Campbellsville University for a senior day meet Jan. 31 at the William T. Young Center. Saturday's meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
