AKRON, Ohio- The Transylvania University men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their impressive run at the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championships Friday at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium taking down two more school records and earning another conference title.
Transylvania earned two OAC champions Thursday, in addition to Friday's stellar performances. The Pioneers have now tallied three conference titles and taken down five school records in the first two days of the event.
The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Julia Johnson, sophomore Morgan Cyrus, sophomore Elizabeth Davis and sophomore Meghan Taylor posted an all-conference performance in the first event of the day racing to a time of 1:47.84 breaking their previous time of 1:49.42 which set a school record in 2014.
Johnson earned the conference crown in the 400-yard individual medley for the second consecutive year and holds the OAC record in the event and her time of 4:36.28 was good for a B-cut.
Cyrus took second-place in the 100-yard breaststroke and broke the school record for the event twice Friday and was just .02 seconds off the B-cut time. Cyrus first broke the four-year old record with an 1:06.35 in prelims, before posting a 1:05.51 in the finals. Taylor blistered the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.12 earning a B-cut finish and breaking the school record. Taylor held the record in the event, but erased more than a second off her time.
In men's competition, junior Sam Mullen, senior E.J. Quijano, sophomore Fernando Zarante and freshman Edward Freeman raced to a 1:36.29 in the 200-yard medley relay earning a third-place finish.
Mullen earned fifth-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. Quijano and Freeman finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke picking up additional points for the Pioneers.
The women's team is currently in fourth place, as Mount Union, Ohio Northern and John Carroll sit atop the field. On the men's side, the Pioneers are in fifth place following the second day of competition.
The championship event includes seven teams, including Transylvania, who compete within the OAC including: Baldwin Wallace University, John Carroll University, University of Mount Union, Ohio Northern University, Wilmington College and host, Defiance College.
