LEXINGTON, Ky.—With the match seemingly out of reach, freshman Mary Grace Amato rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to lead the Pioneers to a 5-4 win in a pivotal Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday.
Amato and Manchester's Megan Buckner split the first two sets and Buckner was able to build a 4-1 advantage, before Amato pulled off an impressive comeback to help the Pioneers move to 3-3 on the season and move ahead of Manchester one spot in the HCAC standings.
The Pioneers took the first two points of the match, as the duo of Megan Dixon and Claire Mielcarek remained undefeated in No. 1 doubles on the season with an 8-2 win over Manchester's Erin Cordill and Katy Ashpole. Amato and Lilli Williams followed with an 8-1 win over Manchester's Katie Peden and Megan Buckner. The Spartans, however, stole the No. 3 doubles match over the Pioneers to take their first point of the match, as the teams headed to singles play.
