Women's tennis falls in opening round of HCAC tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—A valiant effort from the Transylvania University women's tennis team fell just short at the West Indy Racquet Club on Friday night, as the Pioneers lost their HCAC Tournament opening round matchup with Rose-Hulman.

The Pioneers trailed 1-2 after doubles action, with their sole win coming from the duo of Claire Mielcarek and Megan Dixon. They defeated the Rose-Hulman number one doubles tandem by a score of 8-5. In the second doubles contest as Lillian Williams and Emily Fulkerson lost 8-2 before Jenna Nidiffer and Jessica Shotwell fell 8-4 in the closing doubles matchup.

In singles action, Mielcarek polished off her collegiate career with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory to even the score at 2-2. Transylvania then jumped to a 3-2 lead behind a 6-1, 6-2 victory from Dixon. It was not enough, however, as Williams fell 7-6, 6-1, Myriah Porter went down 6-2, 6-1 and Nidiffer fell 6-1, 6-1.

Even with the loss, Transylvania continued an unprecedented run of success, making the conference tournament for the 15th consecutive season under the tutelage of head coach Chuck Brown.

The Pioneers will begin their nontraditional season in February with a matchup at Sewanee.
