Good times keep rolling for Pioneers women’s tennis with win over Defiance

Lexington, Ky. – The winning streak grew to four matches and counting for the Transylvania women's tennis team, who took care of the Defiance College Yellow Jackets, 7 to 2 at the Transylvania Tennis Complex on Saturday.

All four wins in the current winning streak for Transylvania have come in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action after dropping its conference opener to Rose-Hulman.

The match victory was made possible by a dominant stretch by the Pioneers, who gave up only two games in their three series of doubles victories.

The closest match of the three doubles contests took place in No. 1 doubles, where Lilian Williams and Madison Miles controlled their opposition in Hannah Hesterman and Danielle Vance for an 8-2 victory. Reigning HCAC Tennis Player of the Week Mary Grace Amato continued her fiery pace by teaming up with Lucy Herrington for an 8-0 sweep over Courtney Alexander and Colby Heeter.

Kearstin Bruther and Myriah Porter played a game of copycat with Amato and Herrington by sweeping their opponents in No. 3 doubles to put Transylvania in firm control as the action shifted to singles play.

Defiance picked up its two set victories of the day in No. 1 singles and No. 5 singles, as Williams fell 6-1, 6-2 to Hesterman and Bruther fell to Cayla Walker in a tight two-set loss. But the Pioneers made quick work in all other matches, as Amato swept Vance, 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles and Lucy Herrington yielded just one game to Alexander in No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Madison Miles controlled the tempo in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Colby Heeter in No. 4 singles, and Porter enjoyed a dominant afternoon over Mackenzie Combs in No. 6 singles action to punctuate a solid September for the Pioneers women's tennis team, who have enjoyed newfound success under first-year head coach Kevin Calhoun.

The Pioneers will try and keep their current mode of success in play next Wednesday when they host Hanover at Spindletop Hall in Lexington. Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.
