Transylvania women's tennis battles Midway, endures 5-4 defeat

Midway, Ky. - In its first dual match of the 2018 season, the Transylvania University women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to the Midway University Eagles at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Complex on Tuesday night.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in the match thanks to an 8-3 victory by the team of freshmen Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton in No. 1 doubles action.

The duo of senior Kearstin Bruther and freshman Alyssa Igyarto then rolled to an 8-2 victory in No. 2 doubles play.

With a 2-1 lead in hand and the Pioneers continued to cruise in singles play as Robinson earned a 6-3, 6-3 win in No. 1 singles play while Burton claimed a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 Singles.

However, the Eagles responded by claiming the next four singles matches to take home the 5-4 dual match victory.

"Tonight was a learning experience," commented head coach Kevin Calhoun. "We have to improve some basic things to play at the level we are capable of. We will be better Friday."

Next up for the Pioneers is a road matchup with the Thomas More College Saints on Friday, September 7. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start at the Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
