Delaware, Ohio –The Transylvania women's tennis team ushered in the 2019 season as the Pioneers competed in day one of the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational at the Luttinger Family Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
The two-day event offered the entire Transylvania roster an opportunity to see court time before the start of match play season.
The tournament also provided an opportunity for Transylvania women's tennis head coach Bill Carey his first chance to see his entire team in action. "Early season tournaments are always a challenge, but I think the Pios competed remarkably well today and supported each other tremendously," commented Carey.
Among the highlights on Saturday were newcomers Erin Biddle, Sheila Cetina, and Christina Duvall, who each completed the day undefeated in singles play. Biddle won her pair of matches 6-1, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-0, while Duvall prevailed 6-4, 6-1, and 4-6, 6-0, 10-8. Additionally, Cetina claimed victories of 6-1, 6-0, and 7-5, 6-1 over the No. 2 and No. 3 singles players from Franciscan.
"I am especially happy for our new Pios Sheila, Erin, and Christina, who got their first wins at Transylvania," added Carey. "They are a perfect 6-0 in singles play to start their careers."
Another bright spot for Transylvania was Callie Messinger, who won 6-1, 6-1, and 6-2, 6-1 in singles play, before teaming up with Duvall to prevail 8-6 the duos' doubles match.
Transylvania will return to the courts tomorrow morning to wrap up play in day two of the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational.
