Hanover, Ind. – The Transylvania women's tennis team had its six-game conference-opening win streak halted by the Hanover College Panthers with a 6-3 defeat at Zeddies Tennis Center on Thursday night.
The Transylvania duo of Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton opened the match with a heartbreaking 8-7 loss to Hanover's Cami Jones and Meghan Farrell in the No. 1 doubles matchup as the Panthers seized a key match at home.
The Pioneers got on the board with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles via the team of Merrick Irwin and Sheila Cetina to square up the afternoon early at one match apiece. However, Hanover took the last match in doubles play with an 8-5 win over Alyssa Igyarto and Christina Duvall at No. 3 singles to take a 3-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the match.
The Pioneers showed grit early in singles play as Robinson turned in the most exciting match of the night with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Jones in No. 1 singles play.
After a Panthers victory in the No. 2 singles matchup, the Pioneers picked up their final win of the night when Burton overpowered Hanover's Lizzy Katzenberger 6-3, 6-1 win over win at No. 3 singles.
The Panthers wrapped up the evening with victories at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to claim the 6-3 match victory over Transylvania.
With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 6-2 on the season and 6-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference while the Panthers improve to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Transylvania will wrap up conference play on Saturday, October 12, when the Pioneers host the Anderson University Ravens in a Senior Day matchup between two of the top teams in the HCAC. The match is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start at Top Seed Tennis Club. Senior Day ceremonies for the Pioneers will precede the 11:00 a.m. start.
