Geneva, Ohio – Transylvania track and field senior student-athlete Graham Smith has qualified for the NCAA Division III Track and Field National Championships this week to be held at SPIRE Institute.

Smith, a senior from Versailles, Kentucky (Lexington Christian Academy) will become the first Pioneer in program history to compete at the national championships in the men's javelin event.

Smith qualified for the 2019 nationals by recording a career-best javelin throw of 61.32 meters at the North Central College Gregory Final Qualifier in Naperville, Illinois on May 15. Smith's throw stands as the seventh-longest throw in the 2019 outdoor track and field season in Division III, easily slating him inside of the qualifying window.

Smith is the third Pioneer to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in track and field from Transylvania, following in the footsteps of Jordin Fender (women's 100-meter hurdles – 2016, 2017) and Cole Green (men's 100-meter dash, 2017).

The national championship appearance will culminate an impressive two-year career for Smith, who transferred to Transylvania in 2017. Smith won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship in the men's javelin with a 59.47-meter throw last month. Since winning the individual title in men's javelin, Smith has twice set new PR's with his throw at North Central College last week serving as his longest throw.

The men's javelin preliminaries are scheduled to begin on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. Eastern Time at SPIRE. Smith is one of 20 men competing against each other in the event. The entire national championships features the top 850 male and female student-athletes across all events.

This year's National Championship is hosted by the University of Mount Union and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

Ticket prices for this year's event range from $13 - $35 and can be purchased online -
