Huddleston, Va. – The Transylvania triathlon team competed in its final lead-up event to the NCAA national championships on Saturday at the NCAA East Regional Qualifier at Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
Fielding two racers for Saturday's race, the Pioneers competed against a field of college triathletes representing programs from NCAA Division I, II, and III institutions.
Senior Shelbi Poehlein took 43rd out of 75 racers, crossing the finish line in 1 hour and 15 minutes. The senior in her first year of triathlon competition continued to show great improvement, finishing the 5K run portion of her race in three and a half minutes faster than her opening race at North Central College during Labor Day weekend.
Freshman Elizabeth Moore completed the initial swim portion of the race in 10 minutes and one second but had to retire early from the race.
Saturday's race marked the final competition prior to the NCAA Women's Triathlon National Championships to be held in Tempe, Arizona on Sunday, November 4. With the 2018 season serving as the inaugural campaign for Transylvania Triathlon, the November 4 event will also mark the first national championship appearance for the program.
