Pleasant Prairie, Wis. – The Transylvania women's Triathlon team ushered in the 2019 season in spectacular fashion as two Pioneers medaled in the Central Regional Qualifier, held at the Pleasant Prairie RecPlex at on Sunday morning.

Malauri Edwards recorded a second-place finish amongst NCAA Division III athletes with a time of 1:09:17, while Grayson Bray finished just behind in third place with a time of 1:09:36.

Sunday's race presented the Transylvania duo with its first taste of collegiate competition. The Pioneers competed against a field of 11 schools from across all three divisions of the NCAA, including five other Division III teams: Concordia Wisconsin, Millikin, Milwaukee School of Engineering, North Central, and Trine.

First-year Transylvania head coach Sean McNulty was pleased with his athletes' performances in their first races of the season, as well as his triathlon head coaching debut.

"Today was a solid start to our season and a great introduction to college triathlon for Malauri and Grayson," remarked McNulty. "They were cool, calm, and collected throughout the entire race, and competed more like upperclassmen than freshmen. We have room for improvement both individually and as a team, but that will come with time as we progress throughout the season. There were some solid teams racing today, and we let them know that Transy is here to compete with the best."

With their success on Sunday, Edwards and Bray solidified their entry into the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships scheduled to be held in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, November 16.

"Now that we have a few weeks till our next race we can put in some solid training, work on the little things, and keep pushing towards our goal of NCAA Championships," said McNulty.

With only two athletes competing on Sunday, Transylvania was unable to compete as a team. Arizona State took first place among Division I teams, while Drury claimed first place in Division II and North Central captured the crown in the Division III category.

The Pioneers will now have a week off to prepare for the Trine University Invitational in Angola, Indiana on Saturday, September 14. The race is set for an 8:00 a.m. start at the Trine State Recreation Area.
