Fremont, Ind. – The Transylvania triathlon team competed in its second event of the 2019 season on Saturday with the Trine Triple Sprint event at the Trine State Recreation Area.
Coming off their selections to the CTCA All-Region Central Team, Transylvania freshmen Grayson Bray and Malauri Edwards each again turned in strong races, finishing fourth and fifth place among Division III racers and 11th and 12th overall against a field containing triathletes from all three levels of NCAA competition.
Bray crossed the line of the three-sprint format race in 1:27:16 and was trailed closely by Edwards, who finished the race in 1:28:10.
Kiara Higgins made her racing debut for the Pioneers and completed the first race in 51 minutes and 12 seconds.
Transylvania triathlon head coach Sean McNulty expressed his enthusiasm with his young team's continued progress: "Grayson is showing that she is a consistent competitor who isn't afraid to mix it up with anyone. Malauri also competed very well, running some of the fastest splits of anyone. We are working on transitions and I saw huge improvement from our first race and even within the races from Malauri. We knocked off another first for Kiarah yesterday! She competed in her first triathlon. It is an intimidating sport and she was so brave the entire race and I am so proud of her."
The Triple Sprint race marked the second straight event to begin their collegiate careers in which both Bray and Edwards finished in the Top 5 among Division III competitors.
The race differed from the typical sprint format race in that it contained three super sprint distance draft legal triathlons in the span of one morning and rotating start times. The race combined a mixture of NCAA collegiate female athletes with other racers from various age groups.
Transylvania returns to competition on Sunday, October 6 at the Tri the Illini race in Champaign, Illinois.
