Urbana-Champaign, Ill. - The Transylvania triathlon team turned in a strong performance at the Tri the Illini race on Sunday morning as two Pioneers posted top-five finishes in the event.
The Transylvania duo have now placed in the top-five of all three races the Pioneers have competed in this season.
"The goal coming into today was to be a competitor while racing on tired legs, and we achieved that goal," remarked Transylvania triathlon head coach Sean McNulty. "The consistency of top-five finishes that Malauri and Grayson are showing as freshmen is impressive."
Sunday also marked the first full triathlon for Kiarah Higgins, who finished the race in 1:42:58.0, including a career-best time of 33:52.8 in the 5K portion of the race.
"Kiarah is now showing consistency as well in finishing her first full triathlon," added McNulty. "We are one week out from finishing our hardest training block of the year, and our fitness is proving that it's working. We went 3-for-3 on setting personal bests in the 5K portion of the race, which doesn't often happen, so it was a great day!"
Other NCAA Division III schools that competed against the Pioneers on Sunday were Millikin University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and North Central College.
Transylvania will now look ahead to the East Region Qualifier on Saturday, October 19, in Smith Huddleston, Virginia. The race is set for an 11:00 a.m. start at Smith Mountain Lake State Park.
