Transylvania volleyball sweeps pair of opponents Saturday for quick start to season

Marietta, Ohio – The Transylvania volleyball team took care of business on its opening weekend, beating the Oberlin College Yeowomen in four sets and doing the same to the Hiram College Terriers in its afternoon match, zooming to a 3-0 start on the 2017 season.

In the morning match against Oberlin, Transylvania won each of their three sets convincingly while Oberlin snuck by the Pioneers in set two by a 27-25 score. The Pioneers won the first set 25-18, set three 25-14, and the final set 25-20 for their second straight impressive performance to start the season.

Sophomore setter Hannah Talkers had 37 of her 75 assists in the first match of Saturday. Talkers added four kills, nine digs, and four blocks in the performance.

Sophomore right side hitter Jordan Horne led the team in kills with nine. Freshman middle blocker Ellie Stigger added seven kills and three blocks.

One of many highlights for the Pioneers in their victory over the Yeomen were eight service aces, with senior Libero Marissa Coutinho and sophomore defensive specialist Rian Boelter each contributing two apiece.

Size reigned supreme for the Pioneers in their afternoon match against Hiram in a 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 29-27 victory. Horne led the way with a team-high 12 kills while providing an additional three digs and two blocks. Talkers tallied 38 assists against Hiram to complete a stellar weekend showing.  

In addition to her 38 assists, Talkers crafted 20 digs in another complete performance. In game two, Coutinho led the team in digs with 26, and two assists.

While all four sets were hard-fought, Transylvania came up with the majority of clutch plays, including the ultimate game-ender in the fourth set to end things after a 29-27 epic.

With their first road nonconference tournament in the books, the Pioneers will look ahead to a midweek Tuesday tussle on the road at Berea College. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. down in Berea, Kentucky.
