Delaware, Ohio – Bolstered by stellar gameplay over its first two sets, the Transylvania volleyball team powered past the Adrian College Bulldogs, 3-1 on Friday night at Branch Rickey Arena.
Putting together a marvelous first set, the Pioneers tallied 13 kills against only three errors for a sizable .400 attacking percentage on the way to a 25-15 first-set victory against Adrian.
The Pioneers kept up the good work in the second set, forcing Adrian into 10 errors against nine kills to amass a 25-21 second-set win, crafting a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
While Adrian crept past the Pioneers in the third set by a 25-23 score, Transylvania bounced back to make the fourth set the final one on this night, crafting 15 kills against four errors for the 25-22 win.
Sophomore setter Hannah Talkers provided her usual offensive boost, adding 34 assists and 13 digs. Senior libero Marissa Coutinho was relentless on the back line, coming up with a match-best 32 digs. Transylvania's defense was visibly superb on Friday as it came up with 68 digs and 24 blocks. Nine of those blocks came by way of junior middle blocker Darby Bourdon, who delivered nine rejections.
Saturday serves as a busy day on the docket for Transylvania volleyball, which faces Invitational host Ohio Wesleyan at 10:00 a.m., before taking on Grove City at 12:00 p.m. noon to complete their pre-conference play tournament trek.
