Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania University Volleyball team opened up the home portion of its season with an exciting 25-23, 27-25, 25-21 victory over the Centre College Colonels at the Beck Center on Tuesday night.
In the first set, the Pioneers took an early 11-5 lead over the Colonels thanks to the strong play of senior libero Marissa Coutinho.
However, Centre fought back and eventually tied the match at 23-23 before the Pioneers clinched the 25-23 victory thanks to a kill from sophomore setter Hannah Talkers.
The second set provided some fantastic play from both sides as neither team was able to pull ahead by more than a few points at a time. Transylvania would eventually claim the 27-25 victory.
With the end of the match in sight, Centre pulled out to a 17-14 lead, prompting Transy head coach Kyle Walton to call a timeout.
After returning to the court, the Pioneers responded with an electric 8 to 2 run, which eventually led to a match-clinching 25-21 victory.
Freshman middle blocker Ellie Stigger tuned in a strong performance for the Pioneers, recording 13 kills and three blocks in the Transylvania victory.
Up next, the Pioneers will have a busy weekend as they host the 2017 Transylvania Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 22 and 23. First up, the Pioneers will face the Emory University Eagles on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
