Transylvania moves into third place in HCAC with sixth straight victory

Transylvania beats Franklin in three sets

Franklin, Ind. – The Transylvania volleyball team extended its season-high win streak to six matches, powering past the Franklin College Grizzlies in three sets Wednesday evening at the Spurlock Center.

With a 25-20, 26-24, 25-16 triumph, Transylvania won its fifth-consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match with Wednesday's procession to victory to move to 5-2 in conference play and 16-7 overall.

The Pioneers received steady performances from the youth contingent on the roster; sophomore setter Hannah Talkers had an omnipotent 29 assist, 14 dig, and eight kill performance. Right side hitter Jordan Horne employed fearsome power hitting all night against the Grizzlies to the tune of a match-high 11 kills.

Freshman middle blocker Ellie Stigger had another quintessential late-season impactful performance with 10 kills to go with a .429 kill percentage.

In the first set the Pioneers quickly took control, amassing 15 kills against just three errors for their best hitting percentage of the night at .273. While Franklin stood within a point at 15-14, the Pioneers used a 7-1 run to pull away for a 25-20 set one win.

The Pioneers hit their main instance of turbulence in the second set as the Grizzlies went up by four at 17-13. But the Grizzlies responded with two of their nine set errors as the Pioneers dug back into the set.

Horne delivered three straight kills to hand Transy a 21-19 lead. While the set saw multiple ties down the stretch, Stigger smacked home a strong kill for a 25-24 advantage, and the Grizzlies hit the ball into the net on the ensuing attack to end the set.

Horne's hard hitting in the third set continued. The 21st point for the Pioneers originated via a high-velocity spike from Horne which ricocheted off of a Franklin fist, off the ceiling and onto the floor. That juncture saw the Pioneers surge ahead, 21-10 and eventually seal up a 25-16 win in the third set for the sweep.

Transylvania moves to 5-2 in the HCAC, good for third place in the conference standings with two matches remaining in conference play. The Pioneers will host Defiance College on Saturday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Beck Center in the penultimate match of the conference schedule.
