Louisville, Ky. – The No. 23 Transylvania Volleyball team shook off a slow start to defeat the Spalding University Eagles in four sets on Wednesday night at Columbia Gym.

Facing the Eagles for the second time in three weeks after sweeping them at the Beck Center, the Pioneers swung back against a hungry Golden Eagles team which took the second set from the Pioneers before Transylvania established their presence on the road to win the last two sets decisively.

With the 25-22, 22-25, 25-13, 25- 13 win, the Pioneers improved their record to 15-4 on the season while Spalding dropped to 5-12 overall.

The Pioneers ventured to Columbia Gym for their final tune-up before the start of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play this upcoming weekend and roared to a 6-1 lead in the opening set.

Transylvania continued to maintain the upper hand until a string of four straight errors saw the Golden Eagles cling within two points of the Pioneers at 21-19. The Pioneers reeled off a 25-22 win to head to the second set with the close but crucial victory.

The Pioneers endured a series of errors as the Golden Eagles built a five-point lead midway through the set. Transylvania's deficit increased to 24-18 as Spalding remained hot at home. Though the Pioneers held off four straight set points by the Golden Eagles, Spalding eventually closed out the second set with a 25-22 win.

Transylvania found its familiar rhythm in the third set, taking the lead from the start and growing the advantage throughout the third set. The Pioneers closed the set with urgency, scoring 12 of the final 14 points to win the third set 25-13.

The Pioneers broke open a 9-7 game in the fourth set with a 5-0 scoring run for a 14-7 advantage. Though the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 15-11, they would get no closer as the Pioneers ended their second straight set on another scoring rampage for their second consecutive 25-13 win to close out the night.

Ellie Stigger led the way with 24 kills and added two blocks. Emmie Bender added 12 kills in the win for Transylvania. Abby Wills had a season-high 26 kills for Transylvania.

The Pioneers open up HCAC play on Saturday, October 5 as they welcome the Anderson University Ravens to the Beck Center. The opening serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
