Lexington, Ky. – The No. 23 Transylvania volleyball team blasted off to a three-set sweep of the Anderson University Ravens to begin the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon at the Beck Center.
Behind a perfect 12 kill and zero error first set along with 13 total aces on the afternoon, the Pioneers collected a 25-8, 25-15, 25-6 win over the Ravens to signal a loud entrance to the start of conference play.
The nationally-ranked Pioneers improved to 16-4 on the season and 1-0 in HCAC play while the Ravens fell to 6-11 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.
Transylvania displayed a focused and powerful opening to the Saturday contest by scoring seven of the first eight points for an instantaneous towering lead.
Hannah Talkers found plenty of teammates for kill opportunities on the way to 12 of her match-high 32 assists in the first set; five different Pioneers registered two kills or more in set one. The Pioneers completed the first set the same way they started, scoring eight of the final nine points to win the set with ease. The 25-8 win came courtesy of eight aces levied by Transylvania in the set.
Anderson showed off its resilience in the second set, sticking close with Transy as the Pioneers had an early lead sliced to 11-8. But Transylvania displayed another strong close, scoring seven of the final eight points in the second set for the 25-15 victory.
The Pioneers closed the lid on the contest quickly with a dazzling run in the third set. After Anderson scored the opening point of the set on a rare Transylvania service error, Jordan Horne came up with a kill to tie up the set at 1-1, setting the table for a gargantuan run. Libero Sylvie Miller made herself at home behind the service line as the Pioneers scored 16 straight points on the way to a 17-1 lead. Miller racked up three aces during the suffocating rally by the Pioneers.
Talkers added six digs and a kill in the win while Miller registered a match-high 17 digs to go with a career-high six aces. Horne led the way with 10 kills.
Transylvania returns to play on Wednesday, October 9, visiting the Earlham College Quakers in Richmond, Indiana. Opening serve for the second conference match of Transylvania's schedule is set for 7:00 p.m. Eastern time from the Druley Performance Gym.
