INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Transylvania Pioneers concluded its season with a 4-1 loss in the championship match of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday, competing with a limited lineup.
Transylvania battled early in doubles play but was unable to secure the opening point. At No. 2 doubles, seniors Eva Clark and Maddy Williams fell 6-3, while first-year Mea Tabor and sophomore Josie Kaminski dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 doubles match featuring senior Maria Hayes and sophomore Paulina Razo-Zapata was halted at 5-4.
In singles play, the Pioneers continued to compete across the lineup. At No. 3 singles, Williams delivered a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory to secure Transylvania's point. At No. 4 singles, Clark claimed the opening set and was leading 6-2, 2-5 before her match was halted, while Razo-Zapata was also in progress at No. 1 singles after taking the first set, 6-4, before play concluded.
At No. 2 singles, Hayes battled through a challenging start and mounted a strong effort in the second set before falling 6-0, 6-3. Tabor and Kaminski competed at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively, as Anderson secured the remaining points to clinch the match. Head coach Bill Carey reflected on the weekend and his team's effort throughout the tournament.
"I'm incredibly proud of this group and the way they competed all weekend," Carey said. "What they showed in the semifinal—fighting back and finding a way to win as a team—was special. That same fight carried into today, and I couldn't ask for more from them." Carey also recognized the contributions of the team's senior class and their impact on the program.
"Our seniors have been a huge part of the success of this program," he added. "Maria, Maddy, Eva, Katie, and Meredith have all played important roles in building and sustaining this standard, and they've left a lasting mark on this team."
Maria Hayes concludes her career with 85 match wins, ranking seventh all-time in program history, while Maddy Williams finishes with 96 career wins, placing sixth all-time for the Pioneers.
With the result, Transylvania finishes the season with a 12-5 overall record.
