Matt Andrews enters his fourth season as the Head Coach of the Transylvania University men's and women's cross country and track & field programs after taking over the programs in January 2023.
Since arriving at Transylvania, Andrews has elevated the women's cross country and track & field programs to unprecedented success, guiding the Pioneers to the best conference finishes in program history. The women's cross country team finished as the HCAC runner-up in 2025, while the women's indoor and outdoor track & field teams placed third at the HCAC Championships in both 2024 and 2026.
During his tenure, the programs have produced 32 school records, 84 All-HCAC performances, 16 HCAC individual champions, 11 All-Region honorees, two NCAA qualifiers, and one All-American. Andrews also coached the program's first NCAA Cross Country qualifier in school history with Ella Detjen.
Under his leadership, Transylvania student-athletes have earned numerous conference honors. Olivia Sparks was named the 2024 HCAC Women's Outdoor Track Newcomer of the Year and the 2024 and 2026 HCAC Women's Sprints/Hurdles Athlete of the Year. Ella Detjen earned 2025 HCAC Cross Country Newcomer of the Year and 2026 HCAC Outdoor Track Newcomer of the Year honors, while Markieus Hill was named the 2025 HCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track Jumps Athlete of the Year. Following the 2025 season, Andrews and his staff were recognized as the HCAC Women's Outdoor Track Coaching Staff of the Year.
Prior to Transylvania, Andrews served as an assistant coach at Manchester University from August 2020 through December 2022. During his tenure, he helped lead the Spartans to the 2021 and 2022 HCAC Women's Cross Country Championships, as well as the 2022 HCAC Men's and Women's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He also helped coach three NCAA qualifiers, including two in cross country and one in the outdoor 10,000 meters.
A 2018 graduate of John Carroll University with a bachelor's degree in Marketing, Andrews was a standout student-athlete, earning four OAC championships, qualifying twice for the NCAA Championships (cross country and the outdoor 10,000 meters), and graduating as the school record holder in five events.
