Nicholasville, Ky. – The Transylvania women's tennis team advanced to its third straight conference tournament championship match on Saturday afternoon with a resounding 5-0 win over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers in the fall 2021 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals at Top Seed Tennis Club.
The No. 1 seed Pioneers won their third straight conference tournament semifinal match, beating Rose-Hulman for the second time in eight days to advance to Sunday morning's HCAC Championship match to take on No. 3 seed Anderson University. Anderson beat Hanover, 5-4 in the other HCAC semifinal on Saturday to set up a rematch of the fall 2019 championship match between the Ravens and Pioneers.
After running the table for the second straight regular season in the HCAC, the Pioneers set out on Saturday to begin their latest championship mission, passing it with flying colors in just under an hour and a half.
Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton made quick work at No. 1 doubles, cruising to an 8-0 win. Alyssa Igyarto and Christina Duvall followed suit at No. 3 doubles, racing to an 8-1 victory for a 2-0 semifinal match lead. Grace Gardner and Katherine Taylor gave the Pioneers a big punch with an 8-3 at No. 2 doubles to send Transy into singles play with a domineering advantage.
The Pioneers continued to roll in singles play as all six players picked up set one victories to close in on a ticket to the championship match. Grace Gardner closed up matters with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Krista Manche and Jessica Burton replicated Gardner's score at No. 3 singles, accelerating to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ruby Kauffman to finish off the afternoon for Transylvania.
Transylvania will square off with Anderson tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. at Top Seed Tennis Court. The fall 2021 championship pits a rematch between Transylvania and Anderson, who battled in the championship match of fall 2019, seized by Transylvania in a 5-1 final. The winner of tomorrow's championship will earn the conference's automatic bid into the spring 2021 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships.
