Defiance, Ohio – The Transylvania women's soccer team dominated possession in the attacking half in a 2-0 victory over the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at Winsper Knobel Field.
The victory moves the Pioneers to 6-3-1 on the year and 1-1-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play while the loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 2-6-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference matches.
After a conference-opening loss at Anderson on Wednesday, the Pioneers bounced back in their latest fixture to earn its first HCAC win of the season in an afternoon that belonged to the road team.
The Pioneers flexed their muscles from the outset as they poured the pressure onto the Defiance defense. Within the opening 12 minutes, the Pioneers forced three saves from the Defiance goalkeeper as Transy took aim at goal early and often.
Transylvania broke through in the 14th minute when Abby Dean played a perfect pass to Brooke Puterbaugh, putting the senior one-on-one with the Jackets goalkeeper. Puterbaugh calmly placed the shot into the side netting to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead.
After the halftime intermission, the Pioneers looked to earn an insurance goal to put the game away. Puterbaugh was once again involved in the second goal as she was fouled in the penalty area to give the Pioneers a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Abby Baker stepped up to the spot for the Pioneers and fooled the opposing goalkeeper with the second score of the day; Baker's ball soared into the net to double the advantage.
The offensive barrage was highlighted by a 32-0 advantage in shots taken by the Pioneers with 19 of those shots being on target.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, October 6 as they take on the Hanover College Panthers in their HCAC home opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM at Pat Deacon Stadium.
