Anderson, Ind. – The Transylvania women's soccer team powered past the Anderson University Ravens 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the 2021 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Quarterfinals to advance to the HCAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday night.
The Pioneers continued its recent hot run of form with their third straight victory while exacting a measure of revenge against the Ravens, who beat the Pioneers in the conference regular season opener earlier this season in Anderson.
The Pioneers applied the pressure early and opened the scoring in the 8th minute as Meaghan Curren played a dangerous ball into the penalty area. The Anderson goalkeeper mishandled the pass as the ball fell to Emilie Yates, who slotted her shot into the corner to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead in the match.
The offense was clicking for the Pioneers as they held a 7-1 advantage in shots taken at the halftime break.
Late into the second half, the Pioneers aspired to ice the game with an insurance goal. After earning a free kick in the attacking half, Morgan Fowler played a great ball into the penalty area which was headed on by Abby Dean. With no one between her and the goal, Abby Baker headed the ball into the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the visiting Pioneers in the 75th minute.
Anderson would go on to cut the deficit to one in the 86th minute, but the Pioneer defense held strong to secure the 2-1 win.
The Pioneer offense continued to roll with a 12-4 advantage in shots as well as a 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
The Pioneers will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday, November 3 to take on the Mount St. Joseph University Lions in the semifinals of the HCAC Tournament. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Schueler Field with the winner advancing to Saturday's HCAC Tournament championship match.
